There is No Such Thing as Hinduism

The Indus River (photo credit: wikipedia)

A long time ago, in a land far away was a river called Indus. Beyond the Indus River lived a people group who were called Indus. Their neighbors couldn’t pronounce a word starting with the “I” sound, so they added an “H” sound at the beginning, calling them Hindus. Their language was called Hindi and their country became know as Hindustan. But for whatever reason, we like to call it India – probably because of the whole Indus river thing.

Fast-forward a few hundred years and highly intelligent westerners arrived on the scene. They noticed complete chaos, and various religions РBuddhism, Islam, Sikh. Not to mention that people were worshiping Shiva, and others worshiped Krishna, and others Vishnu, or  Hanuman, or Durga, or Kali, and the list goes on and on. To simplify things, we lumped all that together and invented a religion called Hinduism, which is now considered one of the 5 major world religions.

Now we teach that Hindus worship millions of gods, when in reality it’s actually a million different religions. Some Hindus are polytheists, others are monotheist, and there are even Hindus who are atheists. But wait, how can you be part of a religion if you don’t believe there is a god? Maybe because there is not such thing as Hinduism.

So take your books on religion and just rip out the whole chapter on Hinduism, because we don’t know what we are talking about.

All of this mess is why “conversion” is such a terrible thing. Hinduism isn’t a religion, it’s a beautiful culture and a deeply rooted way of life. To “convert” would be to change from Hinduism to Americanism. All Hindus know about American culture is what they see on TV, and it’s not pretty. If I were them, I’d rather stay a Hindu, and that’s how we now have Hindu Devotes of Jesus. It turns out that you don’t have to become an American to follow Jesus…just like we didn’t have to become Jewish, but were “grafted in” to The Vine.
