Yoga & Meditation

America is a Christian country, therefore all Americans are Christians. Everything that comes out of Hollywood is a completely realistic example of how Christians live. These Christians have no ethics nor morals and idolize the demons that run loose in the country in the form of Vampires and Werewolves.

“That’s crazy,” you say, “whoever says that has clearly never been to American, doesn’t understand our culture, and probably has never even met a real Christian.”

Welcome to how the Eastern World perceives American Christianity. Don’t you wish you could just erase all those crazy ideas and stereotypes? I wish it was easy to do, none-the-less I’m going to attempt to explain some of the crazy things we believe about Indian culture.

So lets pretend for a moment, that we are a typical American Christians who have never been to India, and don’t understand Indian culture. That should be easy to do. Here are some crazy things we believe:

Meditation is evil.
Satan is the creator of nothing. He can only take the things that God has already created and try to use them for his evil purposes. The God who created the universe, also created Meditation, and He even says in His word, “This book of the law shall not depart from you mouth; but you shall meditate on it day and night” (Joshua 1:8)

David said in the Psalms:
“When I think of You as I lie on my bed, I meditate on You during the night watches” (Psalms 63:6).
“I will reflect on all You have done and meditate on Your actions” (Psalm 77:12).
“I will meditate on Your precepts and think about Your ways” (Psalm 119:15).
“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all You have done; I reflect on the work of Your hands” (Psalm 143:5).

Worshiping idols is a sin, but that doesn’t mean that worship is evil. It just depends on what/Who is the object of our worship. It’s the same way with mediation. We can mediate on God and His Word or we can mediate on other weirdness. If we don’t meditate on God’s Word, we’ll end up as hearers and not doers and be like the guy who looks at himself in the mirror and then immediately forgets what he looks like (James 1:23-24). Lets not do that.

Yoga is evil.
If you have ever attended gym class or done stretches before the big game, than you already know countless yoga positions, so repent of your unknowing participation in such sinful activities (I’m being sarcastic). But there is the issue that yoga means “union with God.” Well, marriage is a union between two people, and we are called to be the Bride of Christ, so people seeking “union with God” though yoga, are looking for what we already have. Although some of their methods are not so good, and most of them are confused about who/what is God? But there is nothing wrong with doing Yoga stretches, it just the other weirdness that’s a problem.

Now we have two options.
We could use these things as a bridge to reach people. Next time you see a new age yogi type person (who is not high). You could ask, “so yoga, that’s about union with God, right?”

Let them talk for a bit.

Then you could say, “can I tell you about my quest to find union with God?” That’s a great opening to sharing your testimony about what God has done in your life, and how you’ve found inner peace and joy though a relationship with Him. Hopefully your new friend will then say, “no way man, I want that too.”

Or you could just condemn all yoga and meditation as evil and ostracize all people who practice such activities. We aren’t going to win a whole lot of souls that way…
